Sunkern č un Pokémon per lo piů simile ad un seme, con un piccolo germoglio che gli cresce sul capo. Sunkern possiede diverse protuberanze triangolari in cima alla testa circondanti il germoglio. Il suo corpo giallo č percorso da tre linee verticali dal colore marrone, due delle quali terminano appena sopra gli occhi scuri di Sunkern con una forma frastagliata. L'ultima striscia inizia immediatamente sotto la sua bocca, continuando anche sulla parte inferiore del corpo. Sunkern ha la possibilitŕ di ottenere il massimo in tutte le statistiche Pokéathlon anche se, ironicamente, č il Pokémon con le statistiche di lotta piů basse. Probabilmente hanno dato la possibilitŕ a Sunkern di avere il massimo delle statistiche Pokéathlon per compensare con le sue statistiche di lotta. Č l'unico Pokémon non estinto, di cui č possibile trovare un fossile. Anche se solo nelle Anime e non nominato (viene chiamato Fossile di Sunkern). l suo nome probabilmente deriva dall'unione delle parole inglesi sunflower (girasole) e kernel (seme, nocciolo) o corn (granoturco). Il suo nome giapponese, ヒマナッツ Himanattsu, potrebbe derivare da 向日葵 himawari (girasole).
